Festive Upcycled Craft Fair

Friern Barnet Community Library, a wonderful volunteer-led library has invited us to lead upcycling workshop, making everything needed for the holiday season. From gift wrap to decorations, the artists and visitors have create so many beautiful holiday musts.

The sustainable creatives included: Alison, Re.New Crafts; Elisa, We aRe Plastic; Vicky, Diwi’s Creations; Christin, Inspiring Sustainability; Taki, Furoshiki workshops; Penny, Threads for a Penny; Lucie, Miel De Lucie

The webinar explains how waste is disposed of in Barnet, the main waste streams generated in London’s homes; What is the circular economy and the 5Rs of waste reduction ; The five reasons to reduce our consumption and our waste ; How to prioritise your waste reduction efforts and ways to reduce waste in eight waste streams: Food waste, food packaging and storage, apparel, electronics, home care, personal care, parties/festivals and young families.

East Barnet Festival

An eco-friendly fair within the East Barnet festival, showcasing some great local initiatives around protecting nature, reducing waste and living more sustainably. The fair included displays, workshops and activities. The fair also featured sustainable artists and makers selling their goods made from upcycled materials.

 

 

 

 

3rd Let’s Cook Together, Sharing Space

In this “Let’s Cook Together” vegan cooking session we enjoyed making:

Creamy hummus with Sasha from Finchley Now

Sweet potato and red lentil curry with Lisa from Bread & Butter CIC

Caribbean bean stew with Anita, Allotmentz

2nd Let’s Cook Together, Sharing Space

This “Let’s Cook Together” vegan session featured two vegan hot dishes, as well as vegan baking. We also included information about ways to reduce waste: by visiting local refill shops, bringing re-usable bottles, coffee cups and containers, and by shopping loose fruit and veg in local shops.

Dishes cooked included a green bean, lentil Persian dish with Lida; a bean curry dish with Anastasia. Justyne made salads and snacks.

1st Let’s Cook Together, Sharing Space

In this event we cooked: Chilli No Carne, a Mexican dish, with Paloma. Rajwadi Khichdi, a Gujarati dish, with Krupal of North London TiffinsGolders Bean with Philip.

We got our creativity flowing by using natural dye (made from onion skins) and end-of-life flowers to create beautiful decorations, with Sharon Mitchell, @leafthiefprint.

We were also fortunate to be joined by Barnet Friends of the Earth’s waste-reduction sub-committee who encouraged us to reduce resource-consuming waste.

This was our final event at Finchley Church End library as part of the Sharing Space grant.

  • Luggage Rummage – this is the eco-friendly version of car boot sale!
  • Japanese fabric gift wrapping workshop – furoshiki – we also showed how to get FREE fabrics from the Curtain Factory in North Finchley
  • Free food and a Low waste vegetarian potluck and a big cake!

a fun-filled evening of sharing and swapping second-hand gifts with your community. Exchange unique second-hand gifts, as well as arts & crafts supplies, and small-businesses materials such as unused packaging.

Finchley’s Nature: we planted pollinator-friendly plants at Albert Place in collaboration with Barnet Council’s Finchley Central Town Team & Finchley Pollinator Project.

At Finchley Church End library, residents met representatives from Finchley’s community gardens and open spaces. Including Finchley Central Energy GardenCoppetts Wood Conservationists ;Finchley Pollinator Project and Cherry Tree Wood and Barnet Green Spaces. There was also a Plants sale by Grow Farm, a green market with local jams from Miel De Lucie, treats from Impact Store, local artists Miki Shaw and Paul Gilbert. Sow seeds and take the pot to grow. Enjoy a display of nature art. Volunteer gardeners from Finchley Central Energy Garden and Finchley Memorial Community Garden helped everyone plant wildflower seeds.

In this Repair Café session we had an electrician, a chair repair and textile mendingtailoring repair stations. Residents brought in their small electrical appliances, clothes that require mending or alterations as well as chairs with any issue. We also hosted a Fashion swap and a Creative upcycling workshop where we made miniature Japanese cakes from upcycled materials with Elizabeth, Black Girl Dolls House Club

We made beeswax wraps to reduce plastic food packaging and keep food fresh. Lucie @mieldelucie is a local beekeeper who donates all her earnings to the food bank.

Sustainable Fashion/ Home/ Personal care Our 2nd Sharing Space session focused on sustainable fashion and home-care. The event included a clothes swap and a talk teaching how to sell your pre-loved clothes on Vinted – by Penny Salman (@threadsforpenny).

Ceci Montero taught how to knit or crochet a coaster from… plastic bags!

Gift Swap & Launch

A fun-filled evening of sharing and swapping second-hand gifts with your community. The perfect opportunity to connect with neighbours, make new friends, and exchange unique second-hand gifts.

We made natural dye from food waste, and helped making bunting to decorate our new space with artist Sharon Mitchell @leafthiefprints.

The fair took place at the London Festival of Architecture winning nature-design installation ‘Let’s Meet on the Edge’, created by local designers and storytellers Adrienne Lau, Daniella Levene and Leila Taheri – Edgy Collective.

East Finchley Festival

The East Finchley Festival in Cherry Tree Woods is a long standing community event that draws a large crowd. It was a pleasure to secure six stalls and be able to host a variety of local environmental groups.

Nested in a conservation woodland forest in North Finchley, this vibrant festival is a community treasure. Our stalls added to the community feel and helped the local residents discover new ways to reduce ways and conserve nature.

West Hendon Broadway

Organised alongside the West Hendon Arts Society, and took place at the Damsel Walk, West Hendon Broadway. This event was themed Urban Tree Festival to attract the local community.
